Decoupage, Spinning Wheels & Stained Glass - Episode 6 "Hearts in Crafts" TVNZ "Heartland"

I really enjoyed making this episode. Justin and I decoupage a lamp which is a relatively easy and effective way of personalising a lamp and updating your interior accessories!

We use a map but you could use pages from a children’s book, sheet music, magazines or even wrapping paper would be equally effective. Using a trim like we did on the show is also a great way of tying the lamp into the colours of the room you place it in. This is a fantastic project to get your creative juices flowing and the finished lamp will give you great satisfaction every time you switch it on!!

Also in this episode we profile Ben Hanley & Suzanne Johnson of Glassworks wwwwww.glassworks.co.nz  who create awe inspiring stain glass windows and you will meet Melissa Boardman of The Paperbird Society  wwwwww.paperbird.co.nz  who makes beautiful native bird inspired cards and accessories.

In the studio I wear a beautiful 50s skirt with sunny yellow and red roses on it,  I bought it at an antiques fair in Brisbane a few years ago and absolutely love it….I always feel so cheerful wearing it! Out in the field I wear a vintage pleated shirt dress in a tomato red. You may have guessed now that I simply adore wearing vintage!

I also head to Ashburton to Ashford Handicrafts where I was impressed to find that it was founded in 1934 wwwwww.ashford.co.nz and is still internationally recognised for their hand crafted spinning wheels and beautiful wool supplies. They also hold fantastic classes like spinning and felting. I try my hand at felting a silk and wool scarf and meet some amazing crafters including a truly inspiring woman who dyes, spins and knits her own pieces. I was fascinated by what she also taught me about natural plant dyes.

I love being a part of this show….Ashford was the first field story I had the experience of shooting and I was nervous but loved every minute of it. I now feel my life and own design work is much more enriched by learning and being inspired by others talents and passion for all that is handmade!

Justin and I look forward to seeing you again this Sunday night 7pm TVNZ ”Heartland” Sky Channel 17
