Once the preservers of New Agers and Stevie Nicks, velvet steps out of the shadows. Casting aside its long associations with hippies and Hugh Hefner's dressing gowns, velvet's making a comeback. From fairly safe option of black velvet jeans to the relatively risky business of a fuchsia leotard, it's around in several guises this season. Heavy velvet is a classic, and adds a lush texture to your look. You could lighten it up with a silk blouse or a piece of knitwear, but it's actually pretty easy to wear. Slippery crushed velvet and its stretchy cousin, however, require a more careful approach - steer clear of wearing them with denim, lace or leather. (cont'd) Katie Newton
