I seem to have quite a number of books piling up beside my bed at present all in various stages of consumption – D.H.Lawerence’s The first Women in Love, The E myth Revisited, by M.Gerber and Mr Pip by Lloyd Jones. However the book that I have enjoyed reading the most recently would have to be Ribbons of Grace by Maxine Alterio. Set in Arrowtown during the goldrush, this beautiful novel follows the life of a Chinese miner who disguises herself as a man to work in the goldfields. It is a rich story exploring friendship, love, ancestral ties, Chinese and white colonial culture and the very real and ugly hostility of white miners to the Chinese community in Arrowtown. It is a gripping read with many layers portaying not only the harsh reality but also the stark beauty and poetry of life in the Arrow hills.
